Oprah’s Big Goodbye

Winfrey Show Ending

As “The Oprah Winfrey Show” goes off the air, who will be most affected?  Of course, Winfrey’s estimated 42 million viewers per week will feel the void.  But what about Winfrey’s employees?  I asked Dan Halcombe, a spokesperson for Winfrey’s Harpo Productions, if show staffers would lose their jobs.  He indicated that there may be available positions for them elsewhere in Oprah’s empire, saying, “We’re ending the show, we’re not shutting our doors.  We have multiple divisions, Harpo radio, Oprah.com and more.”

Media watcher and Syracuse University professor Dr. Robert Thompson tells me affiliate TV stations that get a ratings boost during – and after – Oprah each afternoon will be hurt.  He says, “Stations that are used to having the #1 show in daytime deliver an audience to their local news programs will feel the impact.  Another impacted group is the guests that are usually on.  Relationship experts, authors and others who have used her show as a platform.  Oprah was the holy grail for promoting your latest project.”

Winfrey is leaving her talk show to launch a new cable network, The Oprah Winfrey Network, or OWN.

“The biggest variable that we don’t know yet,” says Dr. Thompson, “Is how well is this OWN network going to do?  If Oprah moves over there and gets a lineup of shows that everybody is talking about and people subscribe to the network, this could be big growth industry for Oprah.”

Thompson says some of Winfrey’s current viewers may not have access to her new network. “This will certainly affect her hardcore fans.  Many people don’t know a world where Oprah’s not on TV five days a week.  For a lot of her real fans, that hour with Oprah is actually an important part of their day.  This will have a huge impact on them, especially those who don’t get digital cable or aren’t in a market where the OWN network will be shown.”

Also impacted, a division of CBS which distributes Winfrey’s show to affiliates.  In a statement to FOX News, CBS Television Distribution said, “We have the greatest respect for Oprah and wish her nothing but the best in her future endeavors. We know that anything she turns her hand to will be a great success. We look forward to working with her for the next several years, and hopefully afterwards as well.”

Halcombe confirms for me that the show’s last episode will air September 9th, 2011.  Winfrey will make the announcement on her talk show today.

Oh my, how will we function without Oprah? Just fine, thank you! Maybe she is planning a new show for Michelle Obama so she can spread the Obama agenda even further!!!! Bye, bye....see ya....

Good Luck and I hope she brings Obama with her. Supporting Obama was one of her biggest mistakes. America do not deserve this.

My only regret is that she can't take Obama with her since she wanted him for President so badly!!! And to those who think that whatever Oprah says is gospel, WAKE UP!! She makes mistakes!! (she backed Obama didn't she?)

Her shows were more about stars and their pathetic lives and not about real people anymore. I haven't watched her for years. Ok flicked through the channels during commercials and even those two minutes were too much.Never have found out which God she believes in. That was the ending for me...

Ooooh,my best friend John Travolta! Ooooh, my best friend Julia Roberts! Gimme a break... Back in the 80's when I flew for American Airlines out of Chicago, several of my friends had her on their flights and said she wouldn't even look at them but would only speak through her "travel companion" saying, "I want this and I want that". I think she's a big phony baloney.... Yuck...

I liked her up until the day she conducted the "fan tour" through her new closet! Gimme a break! That showed me that ultimately her show and all of her "giving" is all about Oprah. She's not all she's cracked up to be at all in my book and I totally agree with the comment about her endorsement of Obama above. Good riddance and let's have someone that isn't associated with Oprah take over her time slot. No Dr Phil, No Dr Oz, No Nate!

What a joy it has been bringing you and your show into my home for 25 years. My how time flies, I can hardly believe it's been that long. Your shows have been so enjoyable and informative. Whatever your future plans and endeavors are - I am sure your will do exceedingly well. Gods riches' blessings to you and your staff!!!

I haven't been able to stomach watching her show ever since it became clear what Obama is doing to this country. I trusted her when she promoted and endorsed him. Now I feel totally betrayed and will never watch or read anything of hers again. Good riddance!

You guys are wrong about the down economy being the reason. I knew it would be at 25 yrs because her friend Matty Stepanik who died in 2004 had said 25 was a good number when she was thinking about leaving the show back then. That is part of the reason among others I am sure but he was important to her and she believes in signs and things like that happened for a reason.

Oprah is the queen of publicity, she always knows the right things to say in the media. In reality, with the down economy, her show was getting too expensive for the local stations to carry, it was not profitable any more. She was going to have to do something soon anyway. She used this as a positive statement, the big O will be fine, she'll grow the new Nate Berkus show and put that or Dr. Oz in her old time slot, and she'll profit just the same. She'll also have her own talk show on the OWN network. Jill, thanks for all of the great insight in your blog today, it was very informative from some very reputable sources. Nice work !

i'm sad to see Oprah go. I DVR her show every day since I miss it while I'm at work. although she's the ultimate businesswoman i'm not sure how successful her new network will be. all her sister shows (Dr. Phil, Rachel Ray, etc) start off awesome but quickly lose steam. Even her magazine isn't doing too well. Her show is the main attraction! People tune in to see and hear her. But I'm sure she'll be fine no matter what happens. And I'm sure she didn't come to this decision lightly.

I'm really sad Oprah is going off the air. I hope she starts up her own show on OWN. I wonder who her last guest will be?
