Driving Up The Deals; GM’s 60 Day Guarantee

November 20, 2009 - 3:46 PM | by: Ruth Ravve

A 60 day money back guarantee.  Its not something you typically get with a new car, but General Motors is betting its new return policy will drive you to take a chance on a new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, or Cadillac.   "May the best car win" is the latest marketing tool by the Detroit automaker, as it tries to boost confidence in its brand and downshift critics who say its vehicles can't stand up to the competition.   "We stand by our vehicles, and we want to make sure that the customer is happy with their new purchase" a GM service rep says.  "We want to show customers that we have reinvented GM".   Customers who buy a car during the promotion, can test drive it for up to 60 days.  If they decide they don't like it, they can bring it back to the dealership for a full refund, minus any rebates, discounts or sales tax paid.  There are some restrictions though.  The car must be kept for 30 days before attempting the return, and then you've got another 30 days to do it.  There can be no more than 4000 miles racked up on the odometer, and if you cause more than $200 damage to the car, you can't bring it back.

GM claims so far 222,000 customers have opted for the 60-day money back guarantee, in lieu of a $500 discount on the purchase.  Most kept the cars they bought, but not everyone was happy.  Close to 200 people have returned the cars.  Disgruntled customers are apparently given exit interviews by one of the company's engineering staff, to find out why the customer wasn't satisfied.   GM leaders call it the "best unfiltered feedback" they can get.  If sales numbers are any indication, the promotion seems to be working.   In October GM posted its first year-over-year monthly sales gain in 21 months.   Its been a much-needed boost for dealerships.   At Phillips Chevrolet in Frankfort, Illinois, sales last month we were up 76% over October of 2008.  "I think the economy is on an uprise and the 60 day guarantee definitely helps us.  I say keep it rolling, keep it rolling all next year" says sales manager Mike Maheras.   The promotion got the attention of suburban Chicagoan Karen Boeck, who bought a Chevy Malibu, specifically because of the return policy.  "I was unhappy with the previous car I bought and I figured that if I was not happy with this one after 60 days I certainly wouldn't be stuck with it like I was the last car and I had nothing to lose".   While Boeck did have to bring in her brand new Chevy to get the airbag light fixed, it wasn't enough to make her want to shuck the whole thing.  She's keeping the Malibu.

The promotion was supposed to end in November, but GM is extending it through the holidays, maybe with the hope that shoppers will want to put a shiny new GM vehicle under the Christmas tree.

I looked into this guarantee. You trade your old car in and purchase a GM vehicle. If you do not like the new car you give it back. MINUS: sales tax, title, license. Oh and don't forget they have the option of selling your old car and you don't get the money they gave you in trade. So unlike the reporter stated "just some small fees" this could add up to thousands. Lets see an example: 30,000 car +1800(tax in MI) +15 (title in MI) +161 (1 yr license fee in Mi on a $30k car) total31,976. Now take out your trade in lets say 2000, total 29.976, you turn in the new car and they give you a check for 28,000. You paid 1976 more than they gave back and you have neither vehicle. So this guarantee isn't all that great. you pay GM 2000 to take your old car and drive their new one for 1 month. Then have to go and find another car and do not have a trade in for that one. This is only an example using a 2000 trade what if you had a 10000 trade you would be out 1976 plus a $10,000 vehicle. If you were in this situation no matter how much you would want to give the GM car back you wouldn't you would lose too much. GM has found a loop hole to sock it to you. But they sound like angels with a guarantee. I have owned a Buick, it was bought back as a lemon. I owned 3 Fords, all were over 150,000 miles when sold. I have owned 3 Chryslers, two had bad transmissions the third, a ram, has 370,000 miles and still going. I have owned a Lexus, it too was bought back as a lemon. I currently have a Saturn with 158,000 miles and think GM messed up by stopping that line of vehicles. I also own a Mitsubishi and have put 17.000 miles on it in 5 months. Not the most comfy vehicle but it has great pick up. Just my thoughts. Sorry it took so long to state them. :)

I'll never buy a GM product as long as the government or the labor unions have ANY ownership interest. They can stuff their commie cars where monkeys stuff nuts.

I have owned GM, Ford and Dodge. GM and Dodge can not come close to a Ford. I currently own a new Ford Escape, a 79 F150 and a Chevy AVEO. my aveo gets around 28 mpg. compair that to the early 80's chevet and escort that was around 40-45 mpg. has anyone else noticed this trend? what is better, a little less emissions or cut your mpg almost in half to get a little lower emissions? think about it. the government does not want you to get better mpg. the mor mpg you get, the less fuel you buy. but wait, the government does not want you to get better mpg. they are making aprox $71,796,000 of of the sales tax alone. not to mention the taxes they collect from the people that do everything from drill the oil to sell the gas at the station. could you imagine if you could increase your mpg at least 30-50%, come on, after 20 years of technology, dont you think that is possible. All I have to say is that AMERICA needs to wake up.

I have bought GM most of my life (16 times) NEVER again ! They should have been building quality cars when they were still number one and wasn't scamming the American public out of tax dollars. Now they want to try to get that business back ? Never again from me. I bought my first of MANY Toyota's at age 46. Not gonna EVER buy another GM. Still a Ford fan since they keep their hands out of my tax dollars. GM will never pay back all they borrowed !!

Another Govt. con job. In case most of you were not paying attention, the money you received for your car is, ta da, taxable as income! And this "try the car" program, but you have to pay the sales tax, is a rip. In Washington State the sales tax rate is around 8.5% of the purchase price. You will pay over $2,000.00 to "try a car for 60 days." No wonder the USA lags the world in math.

I think some of you have little or no knowledge of the new lineup of GM automobiles. I recently purchased a new Buick, the styling and workmanship are far superior to any luxury vehicle I have owned/driven. Before you so kindly offer your opinion I challenge you to drive a new malibu or lacrosse (I did), or any new GM vehicle for that matter. Two years ago I would have agreed that GM was a substandard auto maker. That is just not that case now. Don't let your political bias get in the way. The vehicles they are selling now were designed before the bailouts, GM was on track to improve thier image and quality. It was just bad timing.

If GM would honor their guarantee on previous purchases, I would take my 2009 Equanox back. I am tired of 15.5 mpg city, 16.3 highway. Isn't this the vehicle GM advertises as better mileage than a Camry? Bull! Oh, GM's answer to my MPG problem; air up the tires.

Dadd sounds just like the typical "more patriotism than brains" redneck. Sorry, every Honda/Acura/Nissan product I've owned has gone well over 200k miles. Sadly pretty much all the american cars companies produce boring overpriced crap. Union labor is a joke.

GM won't fail, for now anyway. Obama won't let it. But he hasn't had a problem with letting the company I work for fail. He hasn't helped my brother's company, nor most of my friends who are out of work. And the unions don't understand why they are the most hated groups out there. "We are helping the American worker". No, you destroy others 10 fold everytime you cry about how awful you have it and strike. Union hay days are just about over at GM. The American people are refusing to buy the Obama Motors. Once Obama is gone, GM will be no longer.

You can't really say the government stole the company from the shareholders, didn't the shareholders (as the owners of the company) technically OWE money? If you owe too much and you can't make payments, the bank will take your home. Why is your business (in this case, the shareholder's GM) any different?

I own a 1991 Suburban 4WD that I bought used when it was 4 years old from a man who was (apparently important to GM late)5 foot 6 inches tall. Anyway, after owning the car for ~6 months, the sterring wheel almost completely fell off into my lap. Towed it to the dealer. The fix cost me $271 and included a single new part - loctite. I was informed that a nut cam loos inthe tilt mechanism and that nut held the steering wheel on, and that I wouldn't have any mor problems because they put loc-tite on the nut. when I suggested that GM should pay for this fix, I was told it was not GM's fault. They asked me if I had owned the car since new, and i said no. They then asked how tall the previous owner was. I said he was about 5 ft 6 in. The then concluded that the steering wheel fell off this car because the previous owner was short, and must have used the steering wheel to pull himself into the car. Funny, I said "show me in the owners manual where it says that short driver may cause the steering wheel to fall off. they couldn't but still, I had to pay. Very last GM product I will ever buy.

looking into finance options on a new vehicle, came across a few gov. credit unions that offer special incentives only if you by a chrysler or gm product. is this why they say you can't compete with the gov't? i thought the gov didn't want to be in the car business.
