Exclusive – Deal Near on Kidnapped Israeli

November 19, 2009 - 10:25 AM | by: Michael Tobin

Exclusive to Fox News – The pieces are falling in place to strike a deal that will free the kidnapped Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit.

Shalit was kidnapped when Palestinian militants dug a tunnel underneath the Israeli-Gaza border on June 25, 2006. It was a violent, cross border raid that killed two of Shalit’s fellow soldiers. He has been in Hamas captivity ever since.

Hamas has been demanding the release of 1,000 prisoners total, in exchange for Shalit. But the hang up has been over 450 specifically named prisoners. Many of them are prisoners Israel labeled as having “blood on their hands,” meaning they have participated in violent attacks against Israelis.

A source tells Fox News that Israel has rejected 70 out of the 450 specific names. Israeli negotiators told German mediators those prisoners would remain in behind bars, even if it means Shalit remains a hostage.

The source says Hamas responded with 70 new names, which are on their way to be reviewed by Israeli negotiators.

Hamas has already indicated an intention to finish the prisoner exchange by November 27, in time for the Muslim holiday Eid Al Adha.

Once an agreement has been reached on the details of the prisoner exchange, Hamas will first hand Shalit over to Egypt. President Hosni Mubarak will be personally tasked with securing Shalit’s safety.  Israel will release the prisoners. Only then will Shalit be returned to Israel to re-unite with his family after more than 3 years captivity in the Gaza strip.

Super Dave, you are the most articulate and correct person on this subject! You know your history and you are unbelievably aware of the Hamas tactics. I hope one day, you can travel to Israel (if you haven't already) and see the true miracle of her existence! All my respect!

Bennett Goldman, as a Jew I am ashamed of what you wrote. It's hard to believe you are a Jew! You certainly stand alone. As for you, Norman Malli, you are just as full of hatred, so you're the pot calling the kettle black. And to Brenna, I suggest you become better informed regarding what happened in Gaza and why. Google these sites : 'Hamas exploitation of civilians', 'Hamas crimes against the Palestinian people', 'Palestinian Arabs' Muslim vicious tactics of human shields', 'Col. Richard Kemp U.N. Goldstone report','Palestinian children & the culture of hate'. Hamas themselves admit and are proud of the fact that they called on their people to die as human shields! Be honest and open your eyes to the truth---google these sites!!

What planet do you live on? The vast majority of Arabs killed during the Gaza fight were combatants. There are numerous documented examples of Hamas teams firing rockets and mortars from schools; planting IEDs in residential areas; using mosques as shooting positions and for weapons storage; transporting rockets in ambulances; booby-trapping schools; not wearing uniforms in order to blend in with noncombatants. Hamas also located its central command in the basement of one of the main hospitals.

It is easy to see why the conflict continues, The Israelites consider one of their men to be worth more than 30,000 of to their enemies, and their enemies know that their own people are worthless, and use them in any way possible to further their own cause. Yet the Israelites do not view them as worthless, only enemies, and treat them as well as possible under the circumstances.

Cockroaches run and hide when the light is turned on. So Norman, why does it bother you when the light of truth shines so brightly in this foxnews space?

Israel is foolish if they do this trade. No one man is worth 1000 terrorists. This will only invigorate the Palestinian terrorist regime to commit more atrocities because they realize if they don't die, that Israel will exchange one of their captured soldiers for 1000 terrorists. It just tells the Palestinians to kidnap more Jewish soldiers ASAP.

This is all stemming from the two religions. Islam and Judaism. How can one man be worth nearly a 1000 captured, 450 of which are surely guilty of murder? I'll tell you. It's called the value of a life. An extreme Islamist organization, that Hamas claims to be, claims the right to kill those who do not convert to Islam and if you look at the Hamas charter, they will never rest as long as there is a country in existence called Israel. Judaism is not founded on death to all non-Jews. Judaism holds to the belief that they are to be a blessing to all the world, all peoples, and all nations. Israel responds with force to rocket attacks because that is all the terrorists, i.e. Hamas, understand or respect or back away from. Hamas is a group of cowards. Anybody who would send their children to blow themselves up amongst a civilian population, has that same self justification that Hitler had when he claimed to be justified in exterminating the Jews. They are evil. Evil people dig under borders and attack guard posts and kill as many as possible then kidnap the survivors and hold them for ransom. The world does not allow Somali pirates to get away with this, so why is Hamas getting away with it? You saw how Obama handled the pirates didn't you? He had them shot in the head to rescue our US citizen. Until Hamas gives up its acts of piracy and barbaric treatment of those who are not of their same beliefs, they should be given the same treatment that they would give others. I am not Islamic and I am not Jewish. I am ... simply amazed at how people from all countries have lost common sense and allow this to continue the Hamas criminals to be in charge of what the worlds wishes to be its own country.

It's about time..... Give them all those that have blood on their hands.. Israel has PLENTY of units (I will not mention their names although I know them all) that can go and eliminate any of those who propose to hurt that country and it's citizens..be it those who were given up for Schalit or others who may be in the shadows. Schalit is what is most important here. That one Soldier..is worth 20,000 Palestinians.. 30,000 Palestinians.... It is so easy with Israel's creativity and tech "know how" to eliminate threats...( notice how quiet it has been....)I have no clue as to why it took so long..but I am thrilled to know that hopefully Gilad will soon be back home.

Israel should kidnap some innocent members of Hamas. It is an unfair playing field.

Gary: You wrote "Both sides Israel and Palestinians" are "blinded by hate". This is simply not the case, and it's important to get the facts right so that you can avoid making such sweeping, erroneous conclusions in the future. The Arab side of the Arab/Israel conflict, currently incarnated for propaganda purposes as "the Palestinians" (Arab settlers in Israel who just happen to be supported financially, diplomatically and militarily by the rest of the hulking Islamic world), has serially rejected each peace deal since the 1948 UN partition plan when it came down to signing. Israel, on the other hand, accepted the UN plan, and the 2000 Camp David recommendation advanced by Bill Clinton, and has never launched a war, and has certainly never attempted to physically or otherwise exterminate any other country, and to this day accepts the principle of establishing a 22nd Arab state on part of historically Israeli land. After the combined Arab armies miraculously failed to destroy Israel in wars they launched in 1948, 1956, 1967 and 1973, the Arabs turned to terrorism and a concocted PR narrative about an ahistoric, unjustly displaced Palestinian nation suffering under Israeli oppression. To this day, the Hamas and "moderate" Fatah organizational charters call for Israel's unconditional violent destruction. While Israel has never questioned the Arab world's right to exist, the Arabs intransigently deny Israel's right to exist despite the dire consequences a century of now utterly unwinnable conflict with Israel has wrought for the West Bank and Gaza Arab economy and general lifestyle. That hate is a tragically determining factor in Arab relations with the Jewish state is undeniable. But saying that the hate is bilateral or even a slight factor in Israeli policy is mistaken, and the proof is that Israel has consistently opened the door to peace even as Arabs fired rockets in through it at them.

1 Israeli soldier for 1000 Palestinian prisoners. What's that say about the Palestinian mindset. They know Israel values every single citizen and will do the utmost to protect their own. Hamas & Hezbollah in the meantime use their own as bomb shields.

Yeah, this whole thing is bound to happen again. Take a look at this article from the Jerusalem Post. Hamas is now offering $1.4 million for another captured Israeli soldier: http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1258489194510&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull

These are very painful concessions that only Israel has to make to release one Israeli. Israel does this because of their commitment to bring all back to Israeli soil. I can't imagine as a father what it is like for this family to go through this type of torment. Its time to bring Shalit home!

Gary, "don't call God into this"? i think i know what you mean, but you gotta think about those words. i say "call God into EVERYTHING" and let him work it out. he is much better at handling the details than me. :) Dan in Florida, good point! i pray for Peace in Israel, and i pray for an end to "terror". how horrible it must be to live in a place where you are always on edge of attack. the USA used to know that feeling after 9/11, but apparently most "forgot". the best defense is an offense. God Bless! -D

What is to prevent Hamas from capturing another soldier in the future and holding him hostage for another 1000 prisoners? What is to prevent any other terrorist group from doing the same. Israel has just informed the world that it will cave in to these type of demands. Too bad.

What dicotomy, Hamas doesnt think that Israel should exist and that they should be converted or subserviant to Islam. Then they place the value of one israeli is equal to 1000 palestinians? Sounds like they got some self-esteem issues to work out!
