Waiting for the President at Fort Hood

November 10, 2009 - 11:51 AM | by: Rick Leventhal

The Secret Service is inspecting/sweeping cameras and other media equipment before allowing the press inside the massive security wall built in front of the U.S. Army III Corps Headquarters building at Fort Hood.

The memorial service is scheduled to begin at 1p local time, 2p est.

It is designed to honor the 12 soldiers and one civilian killed in the mass shooting on post last Thursday, and to honor the wounded as well.  Many of the victims treated and released are expected to attend the ceremony along with their families and loved ones of most of those who died.

Described as a traditional memorial service familiar to soldiers, it will open with a concert from the 1st Cavalry Division Band, the National Anthem, and Invocation from III Corp Chaplain Michael Lembke, remarks from base commander Lt. General Robert Cone, the Army Chief of Staff George Casey Jr. and President Barack Obama.

Amazing Grace will be sung by Master Sgt. Natasha Harley of the 1st Cavalry.

There will also be scripture reading and a final roll call, volleys fired and taps played by a bugler.

I echo the comments of the previous writer. As a former US Marine I am praying for all our servicemen and women who stand ready to protect and defend this great nation, as well as their families. May they find safety and comfort in these troubled times. Also, during the memorial service I was deeply touched by the beautiful voice of MSGT. Natasha D. Harley; she has the best voice since the wonderful Mahalia Jackson.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the 12 fallen soliders and the injured soldiers. We pray that this never happens again on any of our bases again. Thank You for your bravery and courage it takes to be in our military today. God Bless our troops and God Bless America. United We Stand!
