‘This is It’…The Final Stamp?

October 28, 2009 - 10:08 AM | by: Adam Housley

Having covered the trial, the acquittal, the controversy surrounding the 'King of Pop' and of course the eventual death of Michael Jackson, I walked into the Theater in Hollywood unsure how I would react to 'This is It'. We all knew that the two-week run of this production would attract millions around the globe and likely put quite the positive spin on a controversial man who faced some pretty serious allegations in recent years, but will it resurrect the image of this man?

Our viewing in Hollywood was just down the street from the red carpet affair at the new Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles. While the stars and special guests watched what would be MJ's final act there, the domestic and foreign press packed into the historic Chinese Theater to get our first look at the one hour and fifty minute feature. From the outset you get the clear picture that Michael Jackson was in no way too weak to perform, as some have reported. He was thin, but had no trouble at all with his signature moves and many new ones. He was quick, agile and appeared at the top of his dancing and singing game. His voice struck me a strong and clear. Here is a video I shot on my iPhone right as we walked outside the premier and an interview with someone who had just seen it for the first time. http://www.kyte.tv/ch/329916-adamhousley/593841-mj-premier

In fact, Jackson at times looks stellar, as it seems he has a tough time keeping his feet still during the many hours of the rehearsals. Throughout the show, which runs like the making of a music video focusing on some of Jackson's most famous songs, MJ seems very involved in the production and at times appears playful. However, no matter how involved in the production, or how amazing his moves, there is a glaring imperfection that shows on the face of Michael. At times the various colors of light in this film from the backstage footage and brightness from the stage lights illuminates a man obviously tormented. His face at times appears plastic, his nose surreal. While I wasn't looking for it, it does take my attention away from his choreographic brilliance on a few short occasions, as I find myself staring in awe at close ups of MJ. It reminds me of my contact who told me the day after Jackson died that the coroners were shocked about the scarring they found on his face...and also that despite some media reports....Jackson's internal organs were strong and he wasn't weak and frail as some had suggested.

What surprised me the most though was the epic planned production for the London run of 50 shows. This was going to be quite a stage production, no just a concert. While watching 'This is It', you get a glimpse of the green-screen production that was planned for the shows, including an update to 'Thriller' which looked quite amazing.
Again, did we expect anything different? More to come on this throughout the day, what do you think? Do you want to see it, or have you?

Still a Fan

Originally went to the theater to watch another movie, but agreed to watch "This is It" at my mate's request. I was happy I did. MJ was the great performer that he has always been, and his untimely death robbed the world of a final chance to see him perform live, so in lieu, the movie will have to suffice. It's enthralling, captivating, even inspirational in the fact that if I live to be fifty, I hope I can still move like MJ does. Yes, I want to grow up to be like Mike. And for the people that say he was a child diddler, he was found not guilty. And you rumour mongers need to put on purple jogging suits and Nike runners and wait for the flying saucer behind the next comet.

Just saw the movie this evening. I loved it. At the end of the movie, the entire audience clapped and whistled enthusiastically. I overheard many folks stating they planned on seeing the movie again along with buying the DVD when released. I think MJ was one of the most talented and inspiring entertainers on the planet--even in middle age. Folks in the theater were whispering and clapping during several scenes--clearly in awe of his dance moves and singing at 50+ years. His ensemble was half his age and he was amazing at keeping up...way to go Michael RIP. I'm glad the movie producers choose to show MJ in a positive light for the genius he was. It was very entertaining. I would love to see the Jackson family do a tour. I think Tito's three sons (group name Three T's) would be awesome on tour with the original Jackson clan. They are probably now in their 30s are very attractive and talented. They would lend themselves beautifully to a Jackson tour. I don't understand why Sony records or one of the big record labels doesn't get them under contract and promote them in the US. They've got the right DNA. Also, I believe the world media (especially the US media) along with the greedy tour promoters etc. over the decades all contributed in some small way to MJ's eventual demise. Drugs were probably introduced to him to keep the "gravy train" flowing so as to keep him pumped so the show could go on and then more drugs to bring him down and clam him so he could rest. Finally, without a doubt the ultimate nail to the coffin has been the ongoing sensational and never ending news hype..true or false..that finally led to MJ's downfall..after all he was only human! And most importantly, shame shame on all of the digusting enablers over the years and shame on the goverment's in this world where MJ toured for not having monitored prescription drug programs and the doctors who abuse their privileges. There should have been a "deliberate" intervention by force if that would have been necessary years ago to save this man's life. Sadly, this great genius is just another American Tragedy layed to waste way too soon. Peace be with you MJ.

For those supporters, I would assume that regardless of allegations, payoffs, interviews, whatever, he could do no harm in your eyes. Good for you. To me it is hollow worship of a person who was extremely troubled and nagged by stuff that we would all deem inappropriate and criminal in most cases. No, he wasn't convicted of anything, but he put himself in the position to be, and if not, at least the light of suspicion shone on him and he did virtually nothing to assauge it. So you would admire and worship a person who was addicted to a cornacopia of drugs, lived in some sort of fantasy, and in the end died by those that leached off of him. I really don't see anything to celebrate. No hate involved, but a true desire to understand why humans prostrate themselves to questionable gods.

Typical of FOX news to bring the TRIAL up b4 the review has even started. This film isnt so much about the MAN Michael Jackson and neither does it claim to be, its about what made him a WORLD WIDE superstar. Since the age of 5 he sacrificed some of his life to be the one of the greatest entertainers that ever lived. This film is about the genuis MJ not the 'Freak' that FOX news loves to talk about. And i hate it went MJ haters bring OJ into there reasoning of why MJ was found NOT GUILTY. As if to insinuate that any Black star who is aquitted must have gotten off. Do your research and you'll find that MJ and OJ's case have nothing in common besides both being 'black'.. MJ was found not guilty by a unanimous decision by all NON BLACK jury members! OJ on the other hand, well we all know not all the jury members agreed and it had to go to a majority decision (and there were several black jury members). MJ was innocent but yes he was very troubled.

Usualy i dont comment more then once but this time i have to say something else before going to sleep to all Michael's haters. Look people, nobody is forcing you to love Michael, neither to watch the movie, i don't understand your problem. But you need to leave him alone! Why do you have the urge to attack and spread your hate here? If you don't love him, ok, thats your problem. We do. For us he is and always will be the greatest in every way and there's nothing that any of you can say or do to make us change our minds.

Great reporting Jonathan. I was actually not much of an MJ follower until his tragic death. As a mother/grandmother, I recognized the early tragic death of such a great talent. Your review of "This Is It" makes me want to see it even more. Also, your comments ensure that wanting to see "This Is It" isn't macab; but rather what it is -- a desire to see for one last time the great talent we had in MJ.

Michael was an outstanding performer. It saddened me when he got so screwed up. I, as many million others, watched him grow up from toddler to messed up adult. No one knows what was going on in his troubled mind. I was glad he was found innocent of the charges brought against him. He, as others said, is an icon, a stellar performer.

In no court in the United States will you ever hear a judge declare someone innocent. Our system of justice doesn't guarantee that a party, acquitted, is innocent. If you win your case your are acquitted and that is all.

Who cares about a dead, washed up, 'indicted' pedophile? Whay because he's black? Yes, Because he's black. So he gets a pass at his criminality ust like OhJay. What a pitiful bunch you 'supporters' are. The man is dead, dead, dead. It's over. Get off your false idol and move on to 'reality'. S.F.Ns

I read some of these comments, and found that the defense of mj is that the families of the molested kids weren't believable..... Look, I think all those families. Every one of them. Anyone that was dumb enough to leave their kid there should not have kids. I also think there were wicked evil people that let their kids get molested just so they could settle out of court. I hope they burn for setting their kids up like that.

This is an attempt to make the last buck off this guy. Kind of sad. I am not for the whole rewriting history thing. There is more than enough evidence in my mind that the guy was a freak. He molested little kids. I will not watch this thing, and I still don't get why anyone would, or for that, who even cares anymore?

Mimo..you need to get a grip. As for Mike,,he was a good entertainer, that's a given, but that does not mean he was a good person. He had a thing for little boys and that's not good,,,that's bad. He also hated himself to the point he destroyed his own face in the hopes of getting another. They guy, while good on stage, was a freak in real life..Period.

this guy was a child diddler, right? he slept in the same bed with small children that weren't his? right? but he also danced, and he sang, so its ok to ignore the fact that he was a child diddler? he should have been tied to a pole in the town square so we could all throw rocks at him.

While watching, This Is It, several times I caught myself thinking, 'What a loss!'. Because of an incompetent doctor the world has lost such a magnificent and creative entertainer. I felt sad for all those who lost their jobs related to the production of This Is It, here and over seas.

I saw it and it was AWESOME. It portrayed Michael for who he was and not the drama that the media hyped up around him. This man was inspirational and an amazing person. I would recommend seeing the movie so you can see past the media hype, or if your bored, it's an amazing show!

This Adam Housley fellow is pretty far fetched. His previous story about Park Rangers in California was way off mark. I even posted proof to contradict his article, but he removed my posting after he realized it. Lets see how long it takes before he boots me off again.
