Pregnant Women and The H1N1 Vaccine

October 28, 2009 - 4:54 PM | by: Brooks Blanton

Being on a priority list for the H1N1 vaccine doesn’t necessarily mean that you can get it right away. Pregnant women across the country say they are having a hard time finding the vaccine and some desperate Moms-to-be are considering driving thousands of miles to find it.

Because of a weakened immune system that comes along with pregnancy, expectant mothers are more vulnerable to the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 700 pregnant women have contracted the H1N1 Flu so far this year. But what’s more alarming is that 100 pregnant women have ended up in hospital Intensive Care Units and at least 28 have died.

When the H1N1 pandemic started last Spring, Health Officials listed several groups as a priority to get vaccinated this fall. Pregnant women were on that list. But some say being shifted to the front of vaccination lines does no good when the vaccine is in limited supply everywhere.

Doctors, hospitals and clinics from California to Massachusetts say shipments of the vaccine are finally starting to trickle in but it still isn’t enough to cover even the priority groups like pregnant women and medically fragile children. Dr. Jennifer Lyman, an Obstetrician-Gynecologist in Decatur, Georgia says her practice ordered 1500 doses of the H1N1 vaccine several weeks ago. Just this week, 300 doses finally arrived at her office and they are in high demand.

“I think we are just starting to give them to everybody. I told patients who were here last week to call this week, so I can have all my patients get their shots,” says Dr. Lyman.

Emory Hosptial in Atlanta finally received a shipment at their Midtown campus after weeks of fielding calls from anxious mothers-to-be. Janelle Trammell was one of the first in line to get vaccinated here. Initially she passed on the idea of getting vaccinated, thinking she was healthy enough and would not vulnerable to the virus. But after reading about a mother who passed away from flu complications after giving birth, Trammel changed her mind.

“I don’t know a lot of details about how old she was or other illnesses but the impression I get is that she was healthy otherwise,” Trammel says. “So I said well, you know in that case, I would rather be safe than sorry.”

Like many pregnant women, Trammel says she was worried about what effect it might have on her unborn baby. A recent Harris Survey of 668 pregnant women showed that Trammel wasn’t alone fearing the new vaccine. The study found 86% of those questioned believed the seasonal flu vaccine to be safe, but only 68% think the H1N1 flu vaccine is safe. Many believe the H1N1 vaccine has not been properly tested.

“I had some reservations at first. I guess in the beginning because anytime there is something new, you always worry,” Janelle Trammel says.

Cindy Harden lives in suburban Atlanta and is 16 weeks pregnant with her first child. She hesitated about the new vaccine at first, but then weighed the risks and decided to get vaccinated.

“For pregnant women, the risk of catching the flu, whether it’s H1N1 or just the regular flu, is going to be more detrimental to your child than if you were to take the vaccine,” Harden says.

Doctors and health officials across the country worry that unfounded fears of the vaccine -- coupled with the shortage  -- could be harmful to expectant mothers and their unborn babies, driving the death toll of pregnant women well above 28 before this long flu season is finally over.

“We have to constantly have to reassure people that this has been looked at for a long time, this is not a new vaccine,” says Dr. Lyman as she reminds all pregnant women to get vaccinated as soon as possible. “Pregnant women get sicker when they are infected with the regular flu or the swine flu, they are more likely to be hospitalized and they are more likely to die.”

The Massachusetts DPH is not able to tell anyone here where to go to get the H1N1 vaccine (unbelievable!), so, I created a website where Mass residents can share information on this topic: http://massh1n1.org

At this very moment, I am sitting in the ICU by my sisters side that has H1N1. When she was admitted here 2 weeks ago, she was 14 weeks pregnant. She lost her baby a week ago and has been fighting for her own life this entire time. She is in a coma, on a ventilator and this is all due to the Swine Flu. If you are pregnant, I BEG you to get the vaccine and to tell are your pregnant friends about my sister. We are praying that she does not end up anjother statistic!

It's Only Me

A friend of ours his 22 years old 8 month pregnant daughter died from the Swine Flu two weeks ago. They took the baby at 8 months and baby is fine. His daughter's been in a coma for about two months. I guess all her organs started shutting down. I feel so sorry for them.

I wish people would stop bashing each other over getting or not getting the vaccine. Overall you make the best choice on what you know. No one should be considered stupid or bad becasue they choose either way. You are not a bad parent if you give it to your child and you are not a bad parent if you don't.

When that autistic child is screaming in pain nearly 23 hours of the day and can't sleep more than an hour at a time you might think differently. Someone would have to hold a gun to my head before I would give my autistic son another vaccination.

I know several people with swine flu in my school. It's not just a tactic to scare people. I know someone who died from it. So don't go off about this, when you can't say you have experienced it. You're in denial.

I don't know anyone that is stupid enough to get this vaccine. This is all scare tactics to create a sense of desperation and scarcity to get people lining up and rolling up their sleaves. Do you know anyone sick or dying from Swine Flu? I have traveled to 5 different countries since the "outbreak" and haven't met a SINGLE patient!

Last time they did this more people died from the vaccine than the flu. They hyped this up - tens of thousands died EVERY year from the regular flu. They are hyping this up and injecting you with God only knows what. You people are drinking the kool-aide quite literally.

Honestly, I'd rather have an autistic child compared to a dead one.

I am 7 Weeks pregnant and I have not recieved either vaccine. My OBGYN told me I have to wait until my second trimester before I could take any flu shot. Has anyone else heard the same?

I am 8 weeks pregnant and I received both flu shots yesterday. I must admit that, though highly recommended, I am worried sick if all of the pregnant women, or even a portion, who have been given the H1N1 vaccine will deliver a child with some sort of birth defect. My doctor said that not all pregnant women qualify for the vaccine but since I have a heart problem I was able to beat out the odds. I just pray my unborn child will not suffer in any way because of a man-made mistake.

I just hope this swine flu vaccine doesn't end up killing the elderly and paralyzing others like back in the 70's. I don't trust the government to look out for my best interest. They didn't then and probably don't know.

I am 32 weeks pregnant and received a Thimerosol/Mercury free H1N1 shot from the clinic in my town. As the doctor states above, there are FOUR versions of this vaccination. The nasal spray which does not contain Thimerosol/Mercury, a regular shot that does, a shot with a trace of Thimerosol/Mercury and a "preservative/thimerosol/mercury" free version, which I received. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

I think you will all be sorry for running out and getting the vaccine, especially when you are pregnant. There are MANY cases of normal flu that are being reported as H1N1. I can't believe that a parent would take such a chance with their unborn child as to put an unproven, rushed vaccine into their system because they follow all of the mis-information that is spread by the media. When your child suffers the consequences, you will be the only one to blame. Good luck though!!
