A Tennessee gym teacher thinks the answer to getting her students excited about exercise, health and safety lies in a recreational activity that was popular decades ago when their parents and grandparents were kids. Adrian Beech, known as Ms. Beech to her fourth and fifth graders, was practically born on rollerskates. Her grandparents owned and operated 17 skating rinks in Kentucky and Tennessee and she first skated around at just 18 months old. Today Beech teaches physical education at Cumberland Heights Elementary School in Clarksville, Tennessee. Part of her class includes a month-long section on rollerskating, something she says helps a generation that spends plenty of time parked in front of a TV set or computer. She says the class keeps her kids active, teaches them about safety, cardiovascular health and even involves a little bit of physics.
