GM’s “60 Day” Promotion… Is it Working?

October 19, 2009 - 1:46 PM | by: Carina Sonn

Just over a month into General Motor's new promotion and the automaker is calling it a success.

I told you last month about GM's "60 day satisfaction guarantee." Essentially buyers are being asked to purchase a General Motors vehicle - Chevy, GMC, Buick or Cadillac - drive it for at least 30 days, and if you don't like it you can return it for your money back, minus a couple hundred dollars in fees.

We found Karen Boeck at a Chevy dealership outside of Chicago a month ago. She traded in her foreign car for a Chevy Malibu, telling us that she wanted to give American cars a chance. But it wasn't the ads for GM's marketing campaign that brought her into the dealership.

"I walk my parking lot at work and I look at all the different models that are available and there's a couple of Chevy Malibus and there's all different kinds of makes and I thought 'that's kind of a nice looking car.' "

She told us right after buying her car, "Today I feel that I'm pretty sure I'm going to keep it... I feel very confident that one way or another, that everything will turn out for the best. That's what I hope for."

And recently, after the one-month mark, "It's been 30 days and no I don't believe I'll be taking it back. I've made up my mind, I really like the car."

Karen has until 60 days after her initial purchase date to change her mind.

If new car buyers don't take the guarantee they get a 500 dollar rebate instead. A spokesman for General Motors says that across the nation, about 90% of new car buyers know they're going to keep the vehicle, so they're taking the rebate. Only seven customers nationwide have returned their cars - so far.

The car maker says consideration of the the brand is up by about 10-15 %. We'll know how that translates into sales when new figures come out at the end of the month. No word yet on whether General Motors will extend the promotion, which is scheduled to end November 30th.

no one in the gen. public likes a bailout. I wish they had fixed it w.o. one. Even Ford was thinking and talking about a bailout... they came close.. before they managed w.o. one. It's was very hard for GM w the risidual costs from years of retires & expensive labor contracts w the union... And threats of strike etc. Foreign makes never had to deal w that here. Plus so many brands which made sense when there was no foreign competition no longer was efficient.. so they needed a cost restructure etc. No responsible gvt would allow a co like GM to fail & be liquidated... the neg. impact on the economy especially during a recession would have been to great (not just at GM but at the parts suppliers and dealerships etc.) & the cost was much smaller compared to the bank bailouts... I wonder why I never see posts saying I don't do business w gvt. bank when they got a whole lot more. As distasteful as bailouts are, it is done & at least we got shares in the co that we can hopefully sell at some point if the new co does well in the marketplace. I hope they've learned their lessons & are no longer burdened & that they do well & really look after the consumer. I think it's important to have a domestic US owned auto industry. For those who want to buy foreign makes, it certainly would help the US economy if you bought those built in the US w 70% or higher US content... it's written on the window sticker.

To all who call GM "gov motors"please listen to this. I would bet most who are saying this are young people, maybe not, but plant this seed-the factories that were here and ready to build airplanes, ships and tanks for ww2 didn't have Toyota and Honda on their roofs. Now if you had a bad experience that's one thing but I'll put a GM or Ford up against anything now. Did they make mistakes in the past, you bet, but so did the union. GM has been here over 100 years, Toyota & Honda-maybe 20. They never had to go thru unionization etc. PEACE

I would not waste my money on any American made car. Before the bashing, let me explain. As you know, they make crap cars. Furthermore, their crap cars were PLANNED, yes, planned. The big 3 knew that middle class buys most of their products, so they figured if they can sell a new car every 3-5 yrs, they would make $. For some reason the morons forgot that if you sell a crap product, people will not purchase that product again.Planned Obsolescence is why I will never buy American.

I've owned 3 GMs, 2 Fords, 1 Mazda, 2 Chryslers drove 50k a year on almost all. Mazda uses some ford designs and parts. Can't change my own headlights in the Mazda because I have to pull front bumper. Service costs me a fortune for that kind of stuff when the dealer can only get most parts and it's 6 yrs old. Always had alternator trouble with GM products and front main seal leaks too. Chrysler vans have transmission trouble, change trans fluid every 30k or get a new transmission eventually. Fords ran pretty darn well, easier to work on a older car obviously. More prone to buy Ford since they didn't need bailout. Never will buy a Govt Motors again. Willing to support companies with good management practices and innovation by people not Govt

I've had a grand prix for 10 years. At 7 the paint started falling off and there are a million things wrong with it but how can I put money into a car that the paint is coming off of? Before that was a grand am turbo that ran too hot. EVERY month was another cooling related problem. NEVER AGAIN!

I still drive my 1968 Cadillac Fleetwood. I grew up in this car. It's now 42 years old and still runs/looks like new. Insurance is $200.00 a year and gas runs me $150.00 a month. GM had bad years and good years. They are back on track, if I needed a new car, i'd buy GM. But, my Cadillac still runs great on original engine and transmission. and NO CAR PAYMENTS!

I had a new 2002 impala as did my daughter, the problems were never ending, the one problem that finally turned me away from GM was the bad coolant in my car that GM had known about for years, I found on the internet that GM would fix the problem if it was detected by you or a mechanic, no recall, nothing, that was how they were going to handle the problem. I traded for a Toyota Camry, my sister had her Camry 17 years with no problems, likewise my daughter has had hers 4 years.

The reality is... buy what you like. It's not un-american to buy overseas vehicles. Our taxes will continue to support GM and the unions regardless and even more so around election time. Thanks MR President!

There is a Dallas area dealer who, in their radio commercials, offer an extra $500 savings if you OPT OUT of the 60-day promotion...

I agree. To buy American seems risky. I pay taxes and why should I buy a inferior product just to support the UAW member and its terrible suppliers? That "change" is not working!

I have been a GM fan all my life, until now. I will simply not support a company that promotes socialism. I am an employee at a Nissan manufacturing plant here in the U.S. (non-union, by the way). I want to thank President Hussein and gang for giving me overtime again and increasing our market share. That will help my family in the long run. As for Government Motors, I hope they fail along with Obama. This country was founded to get away from the very principles he is trying to push down our throats. Besides, I know firsthand a Titan will smoke any of the Big Three 1/2 tons anyway!

Support an American Car company!!! BUY Ford or Mercury. GM can afford these stupid gimmicks only because us taxpayers are on the Hook! The GM cars have gotten better but the market will decide in the long run, If the Government ever stops meddeling!

GM needs all the publicity it can get at this point. All companies on their death bead will grasp at straws. This company has been dying for years and Odumbo just put the final nail in the coffin. So, continue to buy cars built by UAW it will only keep them afloat a short time more as their business model just does not work.

I have owned gm vehicles for 20 years with not one issue. My secret, don't mess with it. i rarely change the oil, only add it, i never do any maintenance, what a waste of time and money. My last suburban has 270,000 miles on it with only a few oil changes along the way, and it does not burn a drop of oil, i think a lot of problems with vehicles these days, are owner caused. either by stupidity, or over maintenence. Think oil lasts only 3,000 miles, what bs... this is made up by the oil companys to drive oil sales. My 2008 tahoe has 38,000 on it with two oil changes. Unions suck, what a bunch of overpaid idiots. Good job on ruining GM.

I for one will not buy another GM (government motors) product until it is truly out of bed with the government and the unions. Nothing against their products as I have ownes several in the past however, until they can stand on their own without any gov. help I will not own one.

Sorry

Government Motors bankruptcy assets were stolen from shareholders and bondholders and given to Big Labor and the government... I will only buy Ford, Toyota, or Honda (also built by US workers!) Sorry, GM SHOULD HAVE FAILED and still needs to. Socialism is bad for America!
