Strength Forged through Sacrifice

October 13, 2009 - 12:17 PM | by: Maggie Lineback

The USS New York is, in some ways, heading home, even though this is its maiden voyage.

The Navy's latest amphibious ship was built in Avondale, just outside New Orleans, by shipbuilders who continued working through Hurricane Katrina to get the job done. They knew their mission was special. The ship contains seven and a half tons of steel recovered from the World Trade Center after 9-11. It's at the leading edge of the ship.

This morning, people lined the Mississippi River here in New Orleans, hoping to get a glimpse of the USS New York. She left Avondale for New York to be commissioned November 7th. Along the way, she'll stop in Norfolk to pick up Marines. The USS New York will be in New York for ten days and they're expecting about one hundred thousand people to come aboard and visit while the ship is open to the public. More information on how to visit is at www.ussny.org

Some of the people in the crowd this morning were men who built this ship. The head of Northrop Grumman's shipbuilding operations told us he got a chill every time he stepped on board. He said while they've worked on ships before, everyone understands the importance of the USS New York. They were sad to see her go, but happy to finally see her headed out to sea.

The weather matched the mood in New Orleans. When the ship came by our liveshot spot in New Orleans, it was eerie. A fog had settled in across the river and the USS New York looked like some kind of ghost ship.

The ship's motto is: "Strength forged through sacrifice. Never forget."

I am proud to say I have a son that serves on the USS NY and i am sad to see it leaving New Orleans heading to VA since it is taking him further away from me, but proud to see it taking it's place in the fleet of our Navy. Godspeed and my prayers go out to all the men and women who will serve our country on "HER" and the rest of our Heros wherever they are serving our country for our Freedom!

Thank God we finally have a President who understands the meaning of diplomacy. I don't think he deserves any Nobel Prizes just yet, but he deserves a hell of a lot more recognition than Fuhrer Bush.

This is a beautiful ship, can't wait to welcome it 'home'. God speed to all who serve on her, and to all the members of the armed services of the United States.

I did not want Obama to win but I have to admit the republicans did not make a good choice. The only other one who interested me and several other people was ignored and even shunned by his party as too radical. He had been telling congress since about the year 2000 it was going to ruin the economy with its foolhardy practices. Well the crash came in 2008 and no one wanted to admit he was right.

Yeah citizen, you're responsible for this mess. It's not surprising that you're liberal brilliance has buried us financially in 9 months! The sad thing is that you're too dumb to even realize you're candidate is ruining our country. In three years you may not even have freedom of speech. Dumb-ss!

Bill, Your incompetence depicts the liberal mindset and everything that is decaying this country. This ship represents a spirit of freedom. A spirit that people like you will never understand. I feel sorry for you.

That is as may be, but a majority of us felt differently last November, and now you must tolerate our democratically elected leader for at LEAST the next three and a half years. Bet that hurts! Maybe next time the Republicans will put a bit more time into their choice for a candidate and come up with something better than an aging vet and a woman who thinks the world is only 6500 years old and Russia is in her backyard, huh?

You would use the steel, because it is a large amount of steel and this is a purpose for it. Why would you not use the steel from the World Trade Center? The ship is not designed to kill. It is designed to achieve neutral buoyancy and to carry people and equipment. It is a salute to the civilians that died that the ship will use the steel to deliver marines around the world to protect civilians like Bill, who don't understand or appreciate the job they do, but who enjoy their protection.
