Chicago Shocker

October 2, 2009 - 4:23 PM | by: Marla Cichowski

Daley Plaza, Chicago.

Steady drizzle. Below average temperatures. Gusts of wind. None of it was enough to keep die hard Chicagoans from standing outside at Daley Plaza to wait and wonder if Chicago would be the city chosen to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. Former Chicago Bulls player Scottie Pippen got the crowd fired up in no time. People cheering, singing and downright happy! But at around 1030am Chicago time, the excitement and celebrating came to an abrupt end when an IOC Spokesperson  announced (live from Copenhagen) Chicago had received the least amount of IOC votes and would be the first city eliminated from hosting the 2016 Summer games.  The screaming heard throughout a three block radius around Daley Plaza, was the sound of shock and disbelief.  Throughout the past week in Chicago everywhere you went, the conversation inevitably turned to the Olympics. It was THE talk of the town.  The question asked over and over was:  "Do you think Chicago will get the games?"  Support for a Chicago 2016 Olympics was building. There was widespread belief the ultimate  decision  would boil down to Chicago vs. Rio in the IOC's final round of voting in Copenhagen.  No one ever expected Chicago to be eliminated in the first round of IOC voting.  Especially not after President Obama made a special trip to Copenhagen to speak on behalf of the Chicago 2016 bid. After this morning's announcement, volunteers who have worked for the past three years supporting the Chicago 2016 committee, were simply in shock.  Some  had tears in their eyes others shook their heads or stared at the tv monitors, speechless.  As one Olympic volunteer told Fox News, "it's devastating, devastating.  I knew Rio had a good chance, but I never expected this to happen. It's just shocking."  Before the big announcement, Daley Plaza was packed solid with more than 10,000 people, according to Chicago Police.  After the bad news broke, the plaza cleared out fairly quickly, with most people in a sober mood. A few hours later, all that is left behind of today's rally is a few signs and posters scattered around Daley Plaza... reminders of just how close Chicago came to making Olympic history.

I'm as happy as a pig in mud that the Empty Suit in the White House flopped.
