What’s In a Car Name?

October 1, 2009 - 7:30 PM | by: Robert Lee

Everybody remembers the name of his or her first car. I had a Chevelle, my brother had a Tempest, my wife had a LTD II known to her as the “big brown boat” , Steve Brown (Chicago Bureau Correspondent) had a Cutlass and Mark Jeter who edited the video portion of this story had a Skylark.  Chances are you look back and laugh at those days, but did you ever think about what went into the name of your ticket to freedom?

Some cars like the 442 or the TR8 were easy to figure out, it had to do with what was under the hood or the mechanics of the car. But what about the AMC Gremlin defined by Webster’s as "a mischievous elf said to cause mechanical trouble in airplanes”?

We went out to ask some questions of John Howell, The Product Director of The Cadillac Division of GM. Watch Steve Brown’s report here:

How about the Buick Lucerne? The dictionary meaning has two choices. A lake in Switzerland or a mixture of clover and legumes that is fed to horses known as alfalfa.

Mustang was not named after the animal, but rather after the WW2 era fighter plane...

What do you mean "Sebring doesn't mean anything in English". Really? Never heard of the Sebring 12 hour race? They have been racing at Sebring, Florida at the Sebring International Raceway since 1950! No connection between an autmobile name and a famous automobile race of the same name? Oh come on!

Actually, there was never an engine size of 442. What's under the hood was just one digit of the 442 name. The numbers were based on its combination of four-barrel carburetor, four-speed transmission, and two exhausts.
