Hugo Chavez Rant

September 25, 2009 - 1:38 PM | by: Jonathan Wachtel

Hugo Chavez is a master at evading tough questions, so when the charismatic Venezuelan strongman charmed his way through questions from just a handful of international journalists in a packed United Nations conference room before his departure to Caracas, I felt that he really had to be held accountable for his warm relationship with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who had only hours ago denied that the Holocaust took place. The men call each other “brother”.

And their relationship is deeper than mere friendship. The two foes of the US have a memorandum of understanding on military cooperation. Iranian military advisers have been embedded with Venezuelan army units since 2006.  According to intelligence reports, Venezuela has an estimated 50,000 tons of un-mined uranium deposits that Iran is eager to assist them in tapping. Chavez congratulated President Ahmadinejad on his victory in the Presidential elections, calling him "a courageous fighter for the Islamic Revolution." During one of many visits to Iran, Chavez said, "The two countries will unite to defeat the imperialism of North America." Venezuela was alone in opposing an International Atomic Energy Agency resolution against the Islamic Republic for violating nuclear safeguards.

As Chavez slowly worked his way through fawning journalists and onlookers, I ran downstairs to Fox cameraman Paul Alvarez who was standing by at the Delegates Entrance to the UN, the entry and exit point for visiting heads of state to the World Body.

Though in hurry to leave the building, Chavez came over to us. The accompanying heated video exchange tells the rest of the story.

Here is a transcript of what he said. Click here to watch the video on FOXNews.com.

Chavez: "Where do you come from?

Wachtel: Fox News

Chavez:  smiles, chuckles "Fox news...I laugh at  Fox News ...(unintel)... “Have you heard what Sean Penn says about  you…the stupid people from Fox News...That’s the way they call you, not you, not you, the question is artifices...your mind has many confusions perhaps, poison.”

Wachtel: Yesterday we heard Ahmadinejad deny the holocaust, my mind is fine and we saw the pictures from Iran people getting killed in the streets of Iran.  Please explain.  My mind is fine.

Chavez: Have you seen the images from Iraq, where the Yankee soldiers kill children?  Have you seen that?  Have you seen how your channel covers up that criminal act and you say nothing about the president who was genocidal?   The images of the people who have been killed?  Your network hides everything and your President Bush.  You supported Bush and you are criticizing Obama because he is black, but you support...that is why your mind is filled with poison. You said nothing about the killings in Iraq and Afghanistan.  You kill people in  Latin America and the genocidal of the American Indians and the genocidal here in the United States you hide the truth, tell the truth my friend. I am friend of my friend, that's all.

Thank you.

No one needs an enemy when they have a friend like him. Oh, yes, and the truth will set this lunatic free.
