Local Police Advised on Terror

September 22, 2009 - 4:36 PM | by: David Lee Miller

The FBI and Homeland Security officials in a series of advisories are cautioning local police to be on the lookout for suspicious activity at places like self storage facilities, entertainment complexes, luxury hotels and transportation hubs.

The feds say the advisories are not linked to any specific terror threat.

An FBI spokesman said the advisories are not the result  of an ongoing terror investigation that led to the arrest of 3 men.

Despite the advisories New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters

“we have not engaged in any different practices or increased our security.” The commissioner said the city has at least a thousand officers on duty every day to protect New York from a terror threat.

At least one agency is responding to the FBI and Homeland Security advisories. New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority which is a member of the Joint Terrorism Task Force has increased police presence at what an official called “key locations.”

MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said the agency is beefing up security on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro North rail line. Although the MTA also operates New York’s buses and subways he said the New York City Police Department had responsibility for security in those areas.

At New York’s Pennsylvania Station which serves as hub for Amtrak, the LIRR and New York Subways uniformed police and national guardsmen patrolled as usual. One guardsman wearing camouflage clothing with a pistol strapped his hip said he was not aware of any special security precautions.
