Suspect Charged in Yale Murder now at NHPD

September 17, 2009 - 9:36 AM | by: Rick Leventhal

Raymond Clark III, 24, charged with the murder of Yale Grad student Annie Le, has arrived at New Haven Police Headquarters.  He was arrested this morning without incident at a Super 8 motel in Cromwell, CT where he’d been staying since he was released from custody after providing DNA samples.  He’s being held on $3 million bond.

Police said last night Clark would be arrested if and when there was a DNA match and sources confirm this is the case but Chief James Lewis wouldn’t confirm the match during a press conference, saying the arrest warrant has been sealed and he’s not permitted to discuss anything in it.

Clark was employed by Yale University as a lab technician, assigned to work with animals, mostly rodents, used in experiments by graduate students like Annie Le.  Police describe his job as primarily custodial… cleaning mouse cages, cleaning the rooms and assisting students with their lab work.  Clark’s fiance, sister and brother-in-law all hold similar jobs but haven’t been to work since his name surfaced as the “person of interest” in this case.

While police won’t confirm it, the Hartford Courant is reporting there is significant electronic evidence thanks to the magnetic ID cards students and employees must swipe to gain entrance to the building, the basement and individual lab rooms.  The Courant suggests this evidence shows Clark was the last to see Annie alive, documenting her entrance to the building, the basement and then a lab and his entrance to that same room but only his exit.  The evidence also reportedly shows him moving erratically from room to room and eventually to the area where her body was later found.  Various reports suggest there was a blood evidence in the room where Annie was apparently strangled to death.  There are also reports Clark had a variety of bruises and abrasions on his arms, a mark under his eye, a scratch on his right ear and a bruise or deep scratch on his chest, suggesting if he did kill Annie, she put up a fight.  He reportedly “had excuses for everything”, blaming the cuts and wounds on his cats and softball, but clammed up and asked for a lawyer when investigators began taking pictures of the marks on his body.

Police say they notified Annie’s family of the pending arrest about thirty minutes before it happened and that they worked through the night to process all of the paperwork, getting the thousands of pages of documents in front of a judge to get the arrest warrant signed.

There are hundreds of pieces of physical evidence still being processed, according to police, but they prioritized the items and clearly got a match on what was considered most important, likely the bloody clothes found stashed in one of the basement rooms that reportedly belongs to Clark.
