A Few apples, a jar of honey, the holy Bible, and letters from home are doing their way to an undisclosed location in the Gaza strip. This care package was put together by Noam and Aviva Shalit, for their son Gilad, the Israeli soldier, held by Hammas for the last 1,180 days.letters to Gilad Shalit

Yesterday, hundreds from both sides of Israel-Gaza border, have participated in a rare joint rally calling to free  Shalit from his prison, and release Palestinians prisoners who are held in Israeli jails. The rally was held a few days before Rosh HaShana, the Jewish new year, and Eid El Fitr, the Islamic Festival that ends the holy month of Ramadan.
In exchange of allowing the package through, Palestinian activists sent to Israel 100 volumes of the holy Koran to be given to Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.

Shalit’s parents, are hoping to get a prove of life of their son from his captors. “Gilad is so close to here, and yet so far away” Said his father.

Gilad Shalit’s wellbeing matters hugely to the Israeli public. The military plays a major role in every Israeli life. Everyone has a close relative or friend serving in the armed forces. That is why no Israeli fails to be be moved by Gilad’s shy face on the front pages of local newspapers, and by the ordeal of his family.
