Afghanistan’s Election Chaos Continues

September 16, 2009 - 9:24 AM | by: Conor Powell

KABUL – Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission is set to release results from 100% of the the polling stations Wednesday evening, but the outcome of the historic August 20th vote is still very much unknown.

President Hamid Karzai, with 54% of the vote, maintains a large lead over his closest challenger, Dr Abdullah Abdullah.

However, the election has been marred by wide spread accusations of fraud and corruption. Last week, the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC), a U.N back election monitoring committee, ordered the recount of 10 percent of the country’s polling stations because of irregularities. The recount process could lower President Karzai’s vote total to below 50%, forcing a run-off election with Dr. Abdullah.

But just how far to go in reviewing the election and resolving the allegations of fraud appears to be dividing the international community.

The top American diplomat to the U.N. mission in Afghanistan, Peter Galbraith, was ordered to leave the country over the weekend by the head of the mission after encouraging the U.N to take a firmer position on the allegations of fraud – and pressing election monitors to toss out thousands of votes – likely forcing a run-off.

The head of the UN mission in Afghanistan, Kai Eide, is accused of wanting to taking a softer approach and only invalidating a few votes so President Karzai to claim a first round victory- a victory that few believe possible without the help of thousands of rigged ballot boxes.

As the international community tries to figure out how to respond the allegations of vote rigging, the possibility of violence is increasing  -with one member of Dr. Abdullah’s campaign staff admitting that it is becoming more difficult to calm the growing anger of his supporters.
