Anti-Trust Investigation…Over Milk Prices
September 3, 2009 - 5:26 PM | by: Steve BrownWhile prices of milk at the grocery store has fallen by a third in the last year…the price paid to farmers for raw milk has fallen by roughly HALF.
What gives?
That’s was US Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Russ Feingold (D-WI) want to know.
In the attached letter sent to the US Justice Department’s Anti-Trust Division chief Christine Varney…the Senators urge an examination of the nation’s milk pricing system…and specifically calls out dairy giant Dean Foods.
Dean Foods has an estimated forty-percent of the national market for milk sales. In some states (particularly on the Northeast)…Dean is even more dominant.
Dean says it has done nothing improper and says the federal government actually sets the price. The US Justice Department is not saying whether it is or will examine Dean’s business practices.
