Eight Dead in Mobile Home
August 31, 2009 - 9:23 AM | by: David LewkowictAn eighth person is dead in a mass murder at a mobile home in Brunswick, GA. But police remain tight-lipped about what happened Saturday in the normally peaceful coastal community. One survivor remains in critical condition at a Savannah hospital.
Investigators removed bags of evidence Sunday, that police Chief Matt Doering says he hopes will help find the killer. "There's nine victims in this and we're comfortable that none of those nine was involved in this assault."
Doering isn't revealing how the victims were killed but that he is "absolutely 100 percent certain what happened," and "absolutely certain how it happened."
Police have arrested one man, 22 year-old Guy Heinze Jr., who says he discovered the bodies and called 9-1-1. He was charged with tampering with evidence and drug possession. Police aren't calling Heinze a suspect but are not ruling him out. Law enforcement say he is cooperating.
Heize screams, " My whole family is dead," in a frantic 9-1-1 call to police. The recording was release Monday. Heinze is weeping and say he found the victims when he came home Saturday morning and that it looks like they were beaten to death.
Heinze said, among the dead are his father, uncle, and cousins. He pleads with 9-1-1 operators to send help for a survivor who was still breathing but whose face was "smashed in."
A $25,000 reward is being offered for information. Doering says, "we need help." Police acknowledge they don't know if the killer is still out there, and urge residents to be cautious.
