A Living Tribute to Katrina in Biloxi, MS
August 28, 2009 - 5:09 PM | by: David LewkowictBy David Lewkowict & Lance Craig
Four years after Hurricane Katrina ripped across the Mississippi Coast, scars remain. For many the name Katrina still evokes painful memories.
In Biloxi, a city once under twenty feet of water, a lasting tribute is literally emerging from the ground. Artists Dayton Scoggins and Marlon Miller have sculpted marine related works of art into dozens of tree trunks that line U.S. Hwy 90, known as Beach Blvd.
Trees destroyed by Katrina’s fierce winds and heavy storm surge, now stand with new purpose – a symbol of the city’s rebirth.
Mayor A.J. Holloway said, “we’re giving a second life to something Mother Nature attempted to destroy.”
Police Chief Linda Atterberry reflects back on Katrina and how far her city, and it’s people have come.
