Tough Love for New Soldiers

August 21, 2009 - 11:26 AM | by: Tom Jachman

In September Command Sgt. Major Teresa King will become the Army's first female commander of the Army's Drill Sargent School. CSM King believes love for the solider - TOUGH LOVE - is a big part what prepares the army's soldiers to be all they can be. Watch CSM King teach her soldiers in the video below.

RETRANS: "You don't understand, it's a "do nothing" job. Little or no real responsibility. Really, all you do is approve course material and hand out diplomas at graduation ceremonies. It's a position where they "park" a CSM so they can't do any damage...usually because they won't put in their retirement papers. No B.S."

This is exactly whats wrong with the army where getting to soft. Maybe We can hand out lolly pops at basic training to make recruits feel better. Then when they get to their units there all laid back and have no discipline. Thanks CSM King I cant wait for my new soldiers....

SSG Fennell, very well said!!! I totally agree with you. I had the pleasure of working with CSM King years ago and found her to be an outstanding soldier and person, and a total professional. She is exactly what today's soldiers need in a their leaders. These individuals criticizing her do not know her or her qualifications. Out of her very distinquished 29 years of service, they are making a judgement about her based on a one minute video. If I were to make judements on some of these individuals based on what they said about CSM King, I would come to the conclusion that they were racist and sexist. Like you said, "What happen to taking care of our own?" Why would a Service Member disrespect or degrade a fellow Service Member in a public forum. I was taught that if you provide critisism, make sure it is constructive and do it in a tactful, respectful and professional manner. These individuals that are saying mean disrespectful things about this outstanding CSM are totally unprofessional. Again, very well said!!

We soldiers today are pathetic. What happen to taking care of our own? I feel sorry for all of you that left negative remarks apparently you didnt achieve anything while serving and for the ones that are serving you are probably dudes. We create our own destiny with the help of GOD. What you need to do is clean up your own house before entering someone elses. Yes I have been deployed twice and going on my third tour, but being deployed doesnt make you a qualified soldier. I have never worked for her but from seeing the video I wished I had worked for someone as geniune as she is. This new army is a bunch of bull crap and she is exactly what we need training our young soldiers. No one is perfect but hey she was selected for the job and I think she will do an excellent job. Way to go CSM King, NCO's lead the way!

If CSM King is the same CSM King I met in Germany which I think its her. Shes always looking to make sure your uniform is to standard when you are wearing it. I remember everyone that had a ranger roll in their hat always looked out for her cause she would see you a mile away and all you hear is yelling " Get that roll out!" !

As a NCO and a mutliple combat vet in an ever changing Army we are taught professionalism always and the value of perception. I've been on both sides of the army, Infintry as well as Support, there is a difference. Being deployed also makes a difference. Take two NCO's and put them together. Same time in and pretty much same career. Now one has been deployed and the other hasn't. Look them both in the eyes and tell me there isn't something different about a soldier who has spent a year away from everything he knows. You has felt the pain of losing a friends in combat and of being away from loved ones. I'm sure she does have a very impressive ecareer and she is a good NCO, but in this video she degrades our beloved corps. In the Army there is a language that after time you learn it without realizing it no matter where you are from, same thing with how the army writes english. The way the CSM spoke in this video I received the impression that she was trying to be "that cool NCO." When doing a random room a inspection the Army way/ professional way you will knock on the door. Once they open the door it is as simple as saying in a firm level voice; " I'm going to do a room inspection. Do you have anything you are hiding? At this time open your wall locker and stand at parade rest by your bunk." Not I'm gonna check me a bunk. You are not his buddy. And to an earlier comment. There is a huge difference in being Airborne and being a Paratrooper. I noticed no reef above her wings. How I was raised in the military is lead from the front.

No surprise, well, not after I met the Drill SGT's at Ft. Sill. I met 1 that actually argued the Incorrect WAY of doing "Close Interval Dress Right" even though she was arguing with people that had much more time than her and another who's English was so bad (due to an inability to get past his accent) that he was not even Understandable, which of course got worse the angrier he got. As for my "awards" & experience, I got out of Active Duty the first time in 1982 became Army in 2005 and needless to say, was a bit dismayed at who was being made Drill SGT's in 2007.

To those who have recently wrote supportive comments, I commend your efforts. However, regardless of the CSM's bio, it's her responsibility to project to her subordinates and everyone who comes into contact with her that a CSM is the epitome of NCO professionalism and competence. Though she may in fact be a fine NCO, in this video she portrayed herself and enlisted people, in a negative and stereotypical way that most find offensive and embarrassing. This clip should become required viewing at the Sergeants Major Academy.

Only people that do not know CSM King closely are likely to make bad comments about her. Reality is that when you don't know something or someone, you should refrain from giving a comment, opinion or decision about it. People that make bad comments in this thread are either ignorant of her ethics, philosophy, and dedication. Or maybe are just plain jealous that they could never achieve what she has done. To the people that complain on how she expresses herself or the way she talks: As long as her Soldiers know what her intent is, who cares how it is said? Or are you going to tell me that General Patton was the most politically correct orator that ever existed? But you do not judge him by that, but by the results he obtained by his leadership style. And before anyone asks: yes I have been to combat. That is not the issue here. The bottom line is that the best person got selected for the required Job. If you knew CSM Theresa King just a little, it would be clear to you too.

CSM King, CONGRATULATIONS on your new position!! It is obvious that the people making these negative, mean comments do not know you or your qualifications. All of us that know you, know that you are an outstanding soldier and a wonderful person. It sounds to me like most of them making those mean and negative comments have an underlying issue with you being selected for this position. It is really sad that some of these individuals are serving in our military and are leading our troops. If they are so quick to make a judgement about you based on a minute video, they do not need to be making decisions about our soldiers. I know that you would not have gotten to the level you are if you didn't have thick skin. I know you will do a great job. Keep up the great work!! I am very proud of you!!

As a NCO and a Soldier currently working for CSM King, it really saddens me that the so called NCOs who have made negative comments. I understand the civilians because they don't know any better, we as Soldiers and NCOs are held to a higher standard. First, if you know or have worked for CSM King, there is no doubt that she was born to be the Commandant of the Drill Sergeant Academy. Take into account before you make fun of her, that she is a Soldier not a TV star, she was being directed to do certain things that civilians think make a good story. But the real issue, is that as NCOs, it is our job to accomplish the mission and to support our chain of command. We advise, commanders make decisions, and we execute regardless of what our personal opinion is. I have disagreed with CSM King on many many issues, however, I can honestly say that I have respected every decision she has made, not because it is what I would have done, but because that is what NCOs do or should do. By the way, I have two combat tours, OIF I and OEF VI. 15 Months in Baghdad working as a Cavalry Scout, kicking in doors, going on patrols, and standing on checkpoints as a HR specialist. I didn't do it to be "hard-core" like the combat arms, I did it because it needed to be done. CSM King is more than deserving of her position, and to show blatant disrepect publicy is what is really wrong with the Army. "Army Pride"

"...to make sure they can take care of and sustain themself where ever they go..." Based upon whose experience and knowledge? Accountable enough to lead but not accountable to lead in combat? Does she not have anything to offer down range? What is she going to teach drill instructors about life in combat? What she can teach them is how to master the paper drill and check the box withOUT picking up her weapon and toeing the line like those who did and do and were subsequently passed over for this position. Calling her qualified based on her time at the Pentagon says TONS. One, now I know how she got the inside track to the position because, regardless of what her bio says, SHE does NOT epitomize the history, the values and the standard that is or maybe, were, the Non-Commissioned Officer.

I had the pleasure of working with CSM King years ago at the Pentagon. She is one of the most professional and competent NCOs that I served with during my 22 year Army career. All of you making the negative comments and judging her on a one minute video should take the time to read her bio. This outstanding NCO has worked hard and earned the rank of CSM and is very well qualified for this position and affirmative action had nothing to do with it!

To those who have known and worked with CSM King the comments that are critical and attack her speech and abilities as a soldier are laughable. Teresa is from NC and has always spoken the way she has - she has an accent folks - she's not hip-hop and I'm sure she shook her head wondering where those comments came from. She has earned her stripes! You don't have to wear a combat patch to get promoted - she has held many leadership positions, is airborne and served in airborne units, and deserves more respect than shown in this forum. I'm proud to have served with her when we were 1SG's at Fort Bragg and she deserves her new promotion. I guarantee you she wasn't promoted because she is a black female - she's green and I'm sure she's proud of it!

Very sad. I can't even understand what this person is saying. She appears to be speaking some form of hick Ebonics. How this passes for actual communication is beyond me. Gutter language and self depreciation is a poor and cowardly form of leadership. It essentially means that she is incapable of standing up for what is correct and setting the standard. This is clearly the result of affirmative action policy gone wild. It’s bad for the Army, and bad for the future of America.

You know, I think the Army is actually useing Tough Love for New Soldiers. Just look at this woman. She sounds ignorant, looks like a female silverback and probably has breath so bad it smells like she just got through licking corn nuggets off of some ones septic tank lid. It would be tough to love this train wreck of liberal human waste. If they can live through her leadership, they just might make useable warriors.
