Flight Diverted to Miami due to Turbulence

August 3, 2009 - 9:55 AM | by: Serafin Gomez

MIAMI, FL-A Continental flight, en route from Rio de Janeiro,Brazil to Houston,Texas had to make an emergency landing in Miami after experiencing “severe” turbulence. 26 people aboard the plane were injured ,14 of which were taken to local hospitals, and 4 of those were in “serious condition” according to Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue officials.

The Boeing 767 left Rio Sunday night after 9 p.m. and was to land in Houston at 7 a.m. The plane was an hour from Miami when it hit turbulence.

” I have never seen anything like that in my life,” said Flight 128 passenger Richard Sharp in an interview with FOX’s Megyn Kelly. ” It was severe…like nothing that i have ever experienced ,” added Sharp, who says that he has been flying all his life.

Sharp described the fierce turbulence as rocking “up and down and in a vertical motion”. The whole thing only lasted about 10 seconds, but during that time he saw people thrown about the cabin, and  into overhead panels.

“They were pretty severely injured. The ones that were transported were mostly head injuries and fractures”, Sharp.

Sharp says the flight crew, and flight attendants reacted well to the situation, and that the seatbelts lights were turned on but that the whole thing happened so fast that many people did not have time to put on their seatbelts.
