Where is Private Gonzalez?
July 23, 2009 - 11:26 AM | by: Maggie KerkmanUpdate: The Webb County Sheriff’s Department just sent us the booking photo of Pfc. James Gonzalez. He was processed into jail a little after midnight.
======================
We just heard from a law enforcement source who says Pfc. James Gonzalez was found at a friend’s home in Laredo, Texas. This law enforcement official says Gonzalez may have been in the area the whole time, moving from one location to another. There is no indication that he had been kidnapped. In fact, police say he will face charges in connection with being AWOL from the military and could be booked into the local jail today.

We just spoke with someone who claims to have a close connection with James Gonzalez, but wants to remain anonymous because of concerns for his safety. The man says Gonzalez called him several times AFTER he disappeared.

We just spoke with J.C. Gonzalez, James’ brother. He says he’s heard nothing new about his brother’s disappearance. The family has been swamped with media calls and interviews. They’re hoping the intense media coverage will help generate leads to figure out what happened to Gonzalez. They last saw him Saturday, July 11, when he was heading from his family’s home near Corpus Christi to Laredo. The family got a call two days later, from the Army, asking about James’ whereabouts. Soon after, J.C. Gonzalez says he received a phone call from the F.B.I. He says the F.B.I. told him the Army had received a phone call from someone demanding ransom.
The family last night had to take a break from it all. J.C. Gonzalez took his mother out to dinner so she wouldn’t have to hear the phone ring constantly. He says she’s been strong so far, but that she’s broken down in a few interviews. He also says the family’s hurt by suggestions that James Gonzalez has gone AWOL. They don’t believe it, but at this point, they would prefer it to the alternative- that’s he’s been kidnapped.
=======================================
Investigators are trying to sort through the mystery of what happened to 24-year old Pfc. James Gonzalez. Gonzalez went missing last week. Family members say after visting them in Robstown (near Corpus Christi), he had made a trip to the border town of Laredo. They say the Army got a call claiming Gonzalez had been kidnapped and to release him, the abductors would need $100,000 and troops removed from the border.
Army investigators who are handling the case won’t confirm the ransom demand, but do say they’re doing everything they can to find Gonzalez. A source tells Fox News that the FBI is only “assisting” with the case, which could indicate that investigators don’t see this as a cross-border issue.
In the meantime, his family waits for word at his mother’s home in Robstown. His brother says investigators have asked whether Gonzalez might be AWOL, trying to get out of facing misdemeanor charges stemming from an incident with his girlfriend. His brother denies this.
