Michael Jackson Albums Still Topping Charts

July 16, 2009 - 4:12 PM | by: Jill Dobson

Michael Jackson's albums continue to top the charts, following the King of Pop's death on June 25th.  Nielsen SoundScan calculates 2.3 million Jackson albums have sold in the U.S. since his death.  Meantime, some reports state that as many as 9 million albums may have sold worldwide.

Silvio Pietroluongo, director of charts for Billboard, tells me, “We have never seen such a post-death phenomenon since SoundScan began tracking unit sales in 1991.  Unfortunately the industry did not have an accurate sales measurement system in place when comparable superstars Elvis Presley and John Lennon passed away.”

And while it’s not a surprise to see a spike in sales, Pietroluongo says, “the amount of Jackson albums that have sold, and the week-to-week increases we’ve seen, have certainly exceeded anyone’s expectations.”

How long can it continue?  Pietroluongo says the decline will begin soon, but Jackson’s sales could “continue to perform at an above average level for the rest of the year.”

We want to hear from you.  Click “comments” below and share your thoughts.  Have you purchased any Jackson albums in the wake of his death?  What influenced your decision?  Which album(s) did you buy?

Michael was the genius of my time...I grew up listening to his music, and have always been a fan. I just wish I could have seen him in concert before he died. I saw his sister, Janet, with my nieces and she was GREAT! I have bought recently several of Michael's CD's.....Thriller, Greatest Hits, Bad, 2 DVD's on his life in music, and I even got a different Thriller CD that came with his #1 selling 33-album with his picture on it! It is in plastic and a nice keepsake of Michael. I bought the CD's and DVD's as a "remembrance" of Michael's legacy and his talent as an entertainer and singer. I always liked Michael and his music since I was a little kid. He and I "almost" have the same birthday!

First off I would like to say, R.I.P. to Mike. The greatest to ever do it and the greatest who will ever do it. Now I had already owned the HIStory ablum. I remeber standing in line for 3 and a half hours to buy it the day it came out. I grew up lisitng to his music and even learned to do the moon walk at a young age. Later on iI bought Invesible and then collected other over time. Mike was and always will be the King of Pop. Dose anyone else remember trying to make the glove?

We weren't listening as much when he was alive, but when you listen to his old stuff (and the newer) you realize what a genius he really was. As a young child he had that amazing voice-incomparable range and ability to emote. When he lost that he became a percussive, rhythmic singer and his dance moves paved the way for modern pop. Long live the Kind of Pop!!!

I have always liked MJ, both as an artist and as a person, but I outgrew his music during the late 80's. After his death I wanted to know what I've missed and now I'm rediscovering his music all over again. And what a treasure trove it is! I have so much more appreciation of his talent now than I did then. I want to buy his music to be reminded of his genius and how lucky I am that it existed during my time. I like all of his albums but I am particularly interested in a dvd of his concerts from 1987-88. I hope Sony will release it.

Yes Awesome! MJ was and always will be our King Of Pop. I bought one of his cd's and listen to it every day.In my eyes he has gone his music will always live on. Forget about all the speculation about him, in my eyes he was a loving and caring person. Leave him alone let him rest in peace. My love goes out to the Jackson Family, he is a huge loss to all of us.R.I.P. Michael.

I'm even rediscovering some of his Jacksons stuff (as distinguished from Jackson 5, when he was just a kid). Some of his Jacksons stuff is sublime: Good Times, Can you Feel it, Heartbreak Hotel, Life of the Party, Shake Your Body Down, Lovely One.

Although I grew up with his music and I've been a fan all my life (21 years), I never bought any of his CDs until last week, when I got Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad and Dangerous. I still think Bad is the best album ever recorded...and no other comes even close to it.

I know Michael Jackson has a skin disease.I recall the date when black men and women started straighten their hairs I believe if one day Blacks can became white,we will have the same results. Then some people will say Michael Jackson was the first black who tried to become white. But not fellows Mike was sickskin.

I bought Thriller, again, for 9.99 at Walgreens and I have many issues w/Mike the man, but I do like his music. Not to mention are they including the ebay/amazon.com used CD sales in their calculations?

I already owned Thriller as I bought it for its 25th anniversary. It makes me so happy to see that people are either remembering, rediscovering, or just now discovering his music. He really had a way to capture you, his voice being unbelievable on emotional levels. I know I still become inspired just hearing his voice.

There is a major poll running over at www.tinyurl.com/evilgood as to whether Michael Jackson was good or evil. Evil is currently in the lead! I think this poll is being recorded in some sort of record book, anyways, everybody go vote for good!!
