Covering the ‘King of Pop’

LATEST UPDATE

3pm: I just spoke with a contact who has been in the Los Olivos/Neverland Ranch area all of her life and now works in an official capacity.

She says.....

They are still preparing because even If there is no service of any type, they expect thousands of people to come to the area this weekend because of reports that MJ could be buried there. Law enforcement dispatch phone banks in the area are getting a ton of calls from people driving in from all over and looking for guidance and info (not media people).

She tells me, "the road is narrow two-lane to Neverland." She continues, "there no place for a bus to turn around and in some places it couldn't pull over to even allow a car to pass in the other direction."
Officials in Santa Barbara County are still meeting with each other, while doing their best to communicate with reps from the Jackson family. That hasn't been easy.

She says it just doesn't seem like anything big could happen this weekend, because there is too much to do and too many approvals to get in such a short time frame.

They know a ton of activity continues at the ranch, so state and local officials in the area are preparing if not for this weekend, then something very soon.

Again....as we reported yesterday when some news agencies insisted this was going to happen.....the people who need to know are still being kept in the dark and are frustrated and doing their best to prepare for something that may not even happen.

THE STORY
There are few ways to describe covering the death on Micheal Jackson. From bizarre to sad, the last few days have seemed to only spawn a massive amount of rumor, tabloid sources and an outpouring of tributes from fans who still stream down Hayvenhurst Avenue in swealtering valley heat.

They seemingly come from all over and carry everything from flowers and cards, to four-foot purple stuffed gorillas. At times the fans break into song and all take pictures of the massive media compound which stretches for a block along a dusty, dirt shoulder. Here we are penned in by metal barricades erected by the Los Angeles Police Department, but so are the fans across this little two-lane street.

There is so much to say and so many stories. From our affiliate reporter Craig Boswell getting run over by a hit and run driver, to the many fans and of course the odd way in which communication has come from the Jackson family. At some point when I have more time I will attempt to go into more detail.

In the meantime, here are some photos of our coverage and a timeline, in part I sent from my Twitter account.

The Michael Jackson coverage was WAY to much. I can't believe Fox spent all that time on MJ. The East coast and the West coast may care about his life, but in the heartland, we don't give a flip about him. There were many more important news items that needed to be covered, but OH NO all about MJ. I can't beleive they went hours and hours. How many times do you need to see him loaded in the helicopter?????? I am really disappointed in Fox. I will not watch as much as I used to. But I love Glenn Beck and I have to watch him.

MJ did make some very good music. However this media coverage it too much. MJ will be remembered for his music; music only. I thoroughly enjoyed his music. MJ will never be in the same class as Elvis. He should not have ever butchered his body the why he did. Compare pictures from years ago. Why would anyone even want to look at him; freakish looking. The press wanted to make a comment about people coming out of the woodwork trying to make money off his death. BULL-LOOK AT HIS FAMILY trying to cash in the most. That relly digustes me.

I still cannot believe Micheal is gone from us. I so emotionally bankrupt from the loss. I can totally relate to Michal's difficult childhood and his feelings of lonliness. I listened to his music and watched his videos to escape from the constant pain and turmoil I experienced growing up. I am a few years younger than him and I felt as if I grew up with him. No one can totally know what he went through inside his heart. But, Michael found wonderful ways through his music and charities to overcome his ordeals. It is a shame that humanity as it is seems to find a way to try to bring someone down when they are only trying to do good. My only wish would be able to see him one last time. But I know in my heart Michael is safe with God and no one can hurt him any more. I always saw him as a young boy in a grown man's body, just trying to live his dreams and be a good person. There is nothing wrong with that. Please give him the peace and respect he is due. Michael will always have my love and repect.

I think Michael passing is tragic and sad, but he never seemed to cultivate friendsips that could have helped. In this wall to wall coverage it sounds like anyone who got close enough to help was shunned if they dared try! Look where it got him.

MJ deserves the coverage. The news on Iraq has almost been a decade and it's not even a justified war. MJ affected my life way over the stupid war at some middle east country. So sad too many people just cannot jump out from bigotry.

I had rather read about Michael Jackson's death and realize how much he gave to the musical industry - in other words, his talent, than which member of our wonderful political parties are running around on their wives! Or, which dog our President decided to get, or who is gay and is pissed off because they cannot marry.............

The news people need to report news that affects the people and not spend the entire broadcast time focusing on someone that did nothing to better our society. What is this saying to our young people giving so much attention to the lifestyle Michale Jackson lived?? Our country loses military people that are fighting to defend our freedom here at home and we don't give them coverage! Please stop giving so much time to "celebrities" when they die and focus on our military people who die for us.

omg....i think fox is way over doing it..who cares.. i mean cmon...i feel sorry he passed but he is in no way a role model for anyone nor is he really the king of anything...he was just a guy who had a couple of hits that was strange and kept himself in the spotlight doing crazy things...FOX should be covering our soldiers coming home and all the dead and injured that fought for our country instead of Michael Jackson..i mean really people...this guy was also accused of being a pedophile neverthless admitting to sleeping with children in his bed but not assaulting them....where did our morals and values go....thats why we (America) are in the shape we are in today.....

"FOX ANNOUNCES NO MORE MICHAEL JACKSON STORIES" is the only headline I want to read. I am embarrassed that my favorite news network has wasted so much time on the dead alleged pedophile instead of the real stories about how proposed government policies are going to ruin our economy. If there had been any other conservative network not running MJ stories, I would have left FOX for that alternative. Show some courage; have Beck,O'Reilly,Hannity,Huckabee (maybe even Rush) boldly declare "We're mad as hell and we're not talking about Michael anymore!" (sorry for paraphrasing Beck paraphrasing Network). Seriously, I'd rather you would pay more attention to Rep. Ron Paul who has important things to say.

I feel the media love affair with Michaael Jackson's death is ridiculous. They have given his death entirely too much TV coverage. As usual the focus of the "so called major" TV stations failed to report much about what Americans should really be be focused on and that's the Cap and Tax Disaster that is being voted onin Washington, DC.

I agree he has been a pop icon in his day. I think there is more important things to report on like the state of our county and over governing and the 2 things that most irritates me is that Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpten putting their 2 cents in and fighting over who does the Eulogy and his problems with drugs potentially. LET THE MAN REST IN PEACE....

I agree with Chuck. Alternating between Fox & CNN is my usual daily routine. Since Jackson's death, I've discovered I have another 300 channels which have no information about Michael. There is other news! I would like to know more about what is happening outside MJ!

I think it is so sad that very little attention has been paid to the death of Farrah Fawcett. All forms of media have completely covered Michael Jackson and maybe used a thumbnail of Farrah and one statement. I feel very sorry for her family.
