Parking Deck Collapse in Midtown Atlanta

June 29, 2009 - 1:26 PM | by: David Lewkowict

A parking deck leased by Georgia Institute of Technology - better known as Georgia Tech - partially collapsed during the midday hours Monday.  The structure, located at 5th Street and Spring Street in midtown Atlanta is in an area known as Tech Square. Located in the heart of the school's campus, the newly developed complex is surrounded by office buildings, restaurants and hotels. Multiple floors of the garage fell, crushing cars.  No injuries were immediately reported.  Atlanta Fire and Rescue personnel were on scene.  There was no construction taking place.

FOX affiliate WAGA was over the scene and reported on the damage.

The desk is not owned by Georgia Tech, Tech just leases some office space in nearby buildings next to the parking deck. Students and Professors do park there though. And as PG said, it is not in the heart of campus but rather on the extreme outskirts of campus.

While it's true that Tech Square is a part of the campus, it's hard to call a part of campus on the opposite side of Interstates 75 and 85 "in the heart of the school's campus".
