Mistress: “I Leave This in God’s Hands”

June 28, 2009 - 9:35 PM | by: David Lewkowict

The 41 year old Argentine woman suspected of having an affair with South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, acknowledged her relationship in a 200 word statement

C5n, a Buenos Aires news network received the release Sunday, in which Maria Belen Chapur writes that she will not discuss her personal life as “it has already been made too public.”

Chapur also did not divulge the name of the hacker who she claims obtained the emails between her and Sanford, but writes that it is not the man with whom she spent time in Brasil.

Chapur has a “firm suspicion of who particularly may have done this great damage,” but that “living according to the rule of law, I am myself forced to maintain the individual’s name in anonymity. I am not the one to judge anyone, I leave this in God’s hands,” the statement concludes.

The emails were anonymously given to the Columbia SC newspaper, The State in December 2008.

In an editorial published Sunday in The State newspaper, Mark Lett writes “journalists are called upon to describe life in full by reporting the good and the bad, the glad and the sad. “  Lett goes on to clarify why the paper published the emails.

“In the case of Mr. Sanford, the e-mails emerged as a way to understand why he acted as he did.”

“We chose to publish the e-mails rather than deny citizens information about a man they twice chose to guide this state.

It was messy but, we believe, appropriate.”
