mihknotyu gets it exactly right! It's not about the sex. Both sides do it. They're human and they are hypocrites. The problem with Gov. Sanford is that he neglected his duties. He left his state with no instructions or authority for his Lt. Governor to follow in his absence. Had there been a Katrina or some natural disaster, there would have been nobody in state with the authority to act. That is inexcusable and reason enough for him to resign. He let the people down.

What he did to his wife and family is between them and not a public concern other than to show his total lack of character and that he is a sleezeball. He's not alone. The same applies to Gov. Elliot Spitzer, John Edwards, Former Gov.McGreevey, Bill Clinton, Mark Foley, John Ensign, etc., etc.

Perhaps. But, it speaks volumes about the integrity and credibility of the man. How responsible is a politician to constituents that can't honor committment to a spouse? It's unlikely that anything will come of this though. It will fade and ultimately be forgotten. Any political consequences arising from infidelity would infer a relationship between politics and morality. And, we can't have that.

I've got to agree that his apology is probably sincere. I agree more that Mrs. Sanford is making a sincere effort to reconcile the issues in her marriage. I've got to wonder whether Governor Sanford's apology would have ever been heard if he hadn't foolishly drawn so much attention to the affair. After all, he didn't use the weeks he was separated from his wife to repair his marriage.

So, are we to understand that marriage is just a matter of sexual convenience? No other committment? It's just 'I promise to foresake all others until you're no longer naughty in the bedroom.' That's a poor justification for letting down your spouse and children.

Politicians cheating on their wives is nothing new. It happens regardless of party. However, Republicans get a harder reception due to the hypocrisy factor. I mean, these guys build themselves around "Christian values" and "morality", then tell others how to live their private lives. After a scandal, it's all about "forgiveness" and "let he who is without sin cast the first stone". Where was all of this when these Republicans were in office? It's all about self-righteous fire and brimstone when they're in office until they get caught with their pants down I guess.

I believe Govenor Sanford's apology is sincere. He has taken responsibility for his actions and has asked for prayer and forgiveness. Judging from Jenny Sanford's statement, she is the epitome of a solid Christian lady. Her desire is to reconcile with her husband and put their lives back together. This is a time to be heartbroken, not hard hearted. Apparently there are many here that are sinless, because you certainly have no problem with throwing stones. People are fallible. But for the grace of God, that could just as easily have been me or you. There is not one among us that doesn't have the capacity to do wrong. It is very hard to admit our mistakes without blaming someone or something else, much less ask for forgiveness. I pray that God will soften your heart and that the Sanford's can work through this.

None of this is anyone's business except possibly the voters of his home state. The rest is just busy body nonsense on a slow news day.

According to Sanford and the Religious Right, Gay marriage threatens the sanctity of traditional marriage. Who knew it was not gays, but instead,e-mail, a passport, and a Maria.

Republican or Democrat, I could care less about who and how a person private or political has sex. My only concern is if a person holding public office allows their private lives interfere with the carrying out their duties. Him being gone and out of touch is the real issue with this story and the reason he is not worthy to hold office.

Both parties have had their share of infidelity. But it isn't a 'party' thing, it's a human thing. Actually, it's sad if you think about it (and it doesn't apply just to politicians). Lives destroyed sometimes because people are selfish and self indulgent and don't think about how their actions negatively impact their own families. Sad.
