Who would abuse an autisic child?
June 9, 2009 - 5:37 PM | by: Laura IngleSeveral parents of autistic children who have attended Chamberlain Elementary School in New Britain, Connecticut, say special education teacher Michelle Campbell may have been abusing students for years. They also fear that there may be hundreds of young victims who have never been able to communicate what happened to them and possibly suffered in silence without anyone realizing what was going on.
Lawyers for those parents are looking for any other potential victims to come forward to take part in a class action lawsuit to prevent Campbell from being allowed around children. She is currently assigned to administrative duty at another school, within the district, which has enraged many parents who say she should be removed.
The 37-year-old teacher was arrested last October after the state Department of Children and Families conducted an investigation of reports of abuse. Paraprofessionals, or teacher’s aides, went to school officials in May of 2008 to report that they had seen Campbell use what they called unreasonable force while restraining children as young as 5 years old.
The paraprofessionals also reported that Campbell yelled into the ears of children as loud as she could (autistic children are extremely sensitive to sound), slapped them, and threw water in their faces. The most disturbing part of all, according to the parents, is the fact that most of these children are “non-verbal”, and can’t tell their parents what happened to them at school. One paraprofessional who worked in Campbell’s classroom back in 1999 says she repeatedly went to school officials to complain, but was told that Campbell’s work was “just fine”, and that her concerns were constantly ignored by the school’s principal, and the school district.
Campbell has pled not guilty to all charges, and remains employed by the New Britain Board of Education. When contacted by Fox News for comment, she declined our requests. She is expected back in court June 30th for a pre-trial hearing on the 7 felony criminal charges against her.
